DAYS 35-36: Scotia to Amsterdam - Little Falls
Leaving Scotia for Little Falls
Locks E-8 to E-10; Scotia, NY to Amsterdam, NY: 14.2 miles and took a really long time
Amsterdam RiverLink Park
This is another free-ish dock at $1.00/ft: electric, water, showers and bathrooms. The shower is a little funny and you need to be prepared because it's connected, and used, by the restaurant's kitchen - you are listening to orders while you shower - so there's that. I guess you could order fries between shampoo and conditioning ...
There is a competing Water Ski Show in Amsterdam that performs every Wednesday (another one?!). When they practice, it makes for a rocky dockage. So cool to watch though and the kids are tiny!
Locks E-10 to E17; Amsterdam NY to Little Falls NY: 41.7 miles and took a lot longer.
Little Falls Harbor and Rotary Park
Another free-ish dock at $1.00/ft: includes electric, water, showers, bathrooms. The park is run by a handful of volunteers and very helpful settling everyone in.
There's always ONE guy right?
Coming through E-17, this big guy, maybe 59', was the last in line. The canal from E-17 to this dockage is slim and there was a jet ski, ahead of us, was having engine problems (father/daughter trip). The River Captain sided next to him and we protected the rear. Docking was tight, first come - first served, and LegaSea found a sweet little spot on the wall after making sure the jet ski was safe. This 59', with a whinny captain, wanted us to move so he could fit in - mover where? The space was for a 30' boat. That's when we met New Boat Guy (NBG), with a perfect NYC accent, and experienced use of expressive language, he explain to the 59' captain his choices. 59' was in a huff that he had to motor-on and drop anchor somewhere else. If the roles had been reversed, we would have figured it out and dropped anchor without a hissy fit. We later heard about this big guy having a confrontation with another Looper - now I feel sad for the big-guy because he doesn't understand boating and his crew is stuck with a bad captain.
Anyways, We walked into town with NBG and his wife for dinner. We heard the Grateful Dead in the distance - missed the show - ugh! The town is very small and quaint. NBG and his wife were so easy to talk to. It was NBG suggestion to order Utica Greens - so delicious! We call him New Boat Guy because, well, he got a new boat, and loves it. It was a beauty so I can understand.
On our walk I saw the best gift ever! A mink; a real mink! They run all over the streets at night. I tried to call him over to me but he wouldn’t come. I wanted to hold him! So cute! They were just frolicking around town! I wasn’t going to make a coat, just wanted to hold him…

Though I wish this was mine, it's a picture from the internet; photographer not listed.
