LAND TRANSPORTATION: CHICAGO from HAMMOND IN

LAND TRANSPORTATION: Chicago from Hammond Marina

Option 1: Hope the Horseshoe Casino gets its act together and re-starts the shuttle service. It takes you right downtown traveling between casinos and I hear it's FREE.

Option 2: Call Uber/Lyft one-way/$50 and catch the train back ($ depends where you catch the train)

Option 3: AMTRAK with a VERY LIMITED time schedule (1:30PM there and 9:30PM back): $9

This train station is a skip away from the marina. With some creativity, you could make it work. It’s a shame this isn’t easier.

Option 4: SOUTH SHORE LINE: Hammond/Whiting Station (mysouthshoreline.com)

  • Lyft to Hammond/Whiting Station: $12

  • Take the Train Westbound/Chicago: $7

We used The M train to get from one museum to the other: $2

  • RETURNING; Take the Eastbound Train to Hammond/Whiting Station; usually $7 but FREE at this time

  • Lyft back to Marina: $20

*DAYLIGHT: 6 mile from the station to the marina; never walk at night

Option 5: Rent a car $$$

SUGGESTION WITH MAPS: If you're right-handed and your husband is left-handed, decide who will be in-charge of mapping and directions. Once the decision is made, the other spouse needs to zip-it (that would be me zipping it :).

CHICAGO. WOW. HERE IS HOW WE MANAGED IT

Chicago is huge. Chicago is homey; yep, I said homey. Chicago is full of fantastic food, art, entertainment, and sports. You really have to narrow down what you want to see and make a plan - I don’t see any other way to enjoy this beautiful city.

I never thought about visiting because I never really had to think of Chicago; there wasn’t a reason for me to be there so it wasn’t on my radar. My limited knowledge of Chicago had me thinking I would see gangsters and shoot-outs. I also thought it would be dirty and scary. NONE of what I thought was true. Chicago was beautiful. Streets were closed for restaurant seating, flowers were everywhere, and music - I always heard street music. Plus, I had Jim and he always looks out for me. We had to make some decisions, so here they are:

We went to the Science and Industry Museum and the Chicago Art Institute

  • The Science and Industry Museum was just awesome and we spent more time there than we thought. It was like being a kid with adult sized stuff! We saw the captured German U-Boat; they had to build the new wing of the museum around it. The U-boat has a history I never would have thought.

  • The Chicago Art Institute had a ton of choices and I fell in love with Monet … again. Did you know Monet drew caricatures of his classmates and friends? So, basically, he was naughty and would have been sent to Mrs. Beck’s class to have a conversation. One safety-patrol-museum-guy nipped at me for standing too close - it wasn’t my fault! Renoir pulled me in! This museum could do with more benches to sit and absorb the beauty; then again, we are spoiled with the Smithsonian. I think Jim even had a good time.

We didn’t take the architect tour of the city. Instead, when we traveled the river system, we boated right down the middle of Chicago - awesome!
