RIVER SYSTEM: DAYS 121-137: IN THE SLING: MIDWAY MARINA, FULTON, TUPELO, MISSISSIPPI

I can honestly say that I never once thought I would find myself in Fulton, Mississippi. This is way off the beaten path for me. If not for the boat issues, we would have stayed two days and moved on. What a shame, we discovered real beauty here and our lives are a little richer from the experience.

Midway Marina Life:

  • Wifi - excellent wifi coverage (I may never leave).

  • Marina dogs: OMG, love them all and want to take Moby home with me (a perfect black lab). Lulu can smell treats a mile away, it’s her super power, I thought she would eat through my pull over. Dinghy is the sweetest old white lab and collects golf balls. Rosie is just Rosie and likes peace among the pack.

  • On-Site Restaurant: Guy’s Restaurant; the Charcuterie Board is a enormous, Shrimp Po’Boy has a nice sauce, Shrimp & Grits is a tasty treat, the Ruben was perfectly balanced.

  • Art: I really like to watercolor and have SO MUCH TIME AVAILABLE to dedicate to the art; I will make the best flower leaves with practice. The marina has a captain’s lounge comfortable for painting and blogging. Bought a book: Everyday Watercolor with Jenna Rainey: Learn to watercolor in 30 days - so I’m taking the challenge. I really like her style of teaching - mistakes are not the end of the world…. When I went to the mall, I bought her other book Everyday Watercolor Flowers - that’s a Key West Book :)

  • Coin-Operated Laundry: I really need to pace myself; can’t have too much fun in one day.

  • Stupid Binge Watching: Squid Games - for some reason, I can’t not watch this… They are thinking of a second season?!

  • Fire pit: When it’s lit, almost every night, go on over and introduce yourself. Sometimes there are hotdogs on a stick ready for you to roast and a side dish is always welcomed. In no way is a side dish an exchange for your company during a great evening. Just show up and say, “Hi!”

  • Unsanctioned Happy Hour: When the sun touches the trees until about 8PM; BYOB and meet at the office - they are really fun people.

  • Events: This Marina has a facility set up for outside ‘barn’ weddings to include water views, a huge outdoor fireplace, outside catering, bar, and restrooms. To top off the event, make reservations to stay in one, or all three, identical cabins overlooking the water. Cabins also include an outside fireplace and string lights.

  • SEE YOUR LOOPERS! We got to see panacea and Side Piece. They are so much fun to hang out with. I think we'll see everyone ... as they pass on by ... The McBrides stopped by with a quick visit and I met ‘the watercolor girls’ from Silver Linings

Fulton, Mississippi:

Super Walmart, quick fast food chains, smaller restaurants: Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, American Cuisine, Barber Shop, local folks.

Tupelo, Mississippi:

On the way to Tupelo, be sure to keep an eye out for the cotton fields - simply beautiful. Did you know you would need a special permit to grow non-commercial cotton in the state of Virginia because of the Cotton Boll Weevil? It will destroy a field of cotton. When I googled the Weevil, I thought it looked like The Goon from the Popeye cartoon.

Kermit’s Outlaw Kitchen: Quite possibly the best BBQ I have ever eaten.

Elvis Presley’s Childhood Home: Worth the stop; we aren’t Elvis fans but my friend Laurie is - so the pictures were really for her. The location also includes his childhood church and the out-house he used (kid you not).

OMG! Ya’ll - they have a mall! Marina Temporary-Resident, Lou, gave us a lift into Tupelo (North) and they have a mall set up like Potomac Mills on a much smaller scale but with everything you’d want. The ring of the mall has a ton of easily recognizable chain restaurants. How did we thank Lou for this little excursion? A great lunch with great company: Kermit’s Outlaw Kitchen (support local).

The Boat:

10/18: Shaft sheared and lost the prop

10/19: Move boat to lift, break window in aft cabin shower, order all parts

10/22: AFT Toilet pump continues to run - fixed clog (so gross)

10/27: Parts officially sent from warehouse to Marina

10/29: AFT Toilet leaking - fixedish the leak - see if it works

10/31: BOO! Still Waiting ….

11/2: Parts and Mechanics come together on Lega Sea!

11/3: Testing & Provisioning the boat

11/4: Away we go!
