DAYS 249-250 : Jim King Park to Fernandina Beach {Amelia Island}
Jim King Park to Amelia Island: 7.7 mph; 22.0 miles; 2:51 hours
Fernandina Harbor Marina
$25/mooring ball and all marina amenities included. The current between the marina and the mooring field is swift; so if you have a paddle dinghy, you should rethink the mooring field and use the docks. We had to 'crab' the dinghy back to the boat. What a beautiful marina at the end of a tidy historical town.
The Film Festival
When we tied to the dock, we saw a band setting up. “What’s this,” we asked. “Oh, it’s the Film Festival,” we were told. So this will be fun, we thought to ourselves. After listening to a few songs, we walked over to The Palace Saloon, the oldest saloon in Florida. Once inside, it takes you back in time and you can imagine what it must have been like to live during the ‘saloon-like’ years. But what happened next, brought a smile to my face.
I stepped into the saloon and what did I see?
Familiar eyes looking at me.
“David? Dave, is that you?”
“Paige Plummer?”
“Yeah, hey!”
“No way!”
And just like that, 40 years skipped away.
When I see someone from my past, and I have talked about that person from time to time, it’s fun that Jim gets to meet him/her and learn why I remember them so fondly. David Paterson was just as much fun to hang out with as he was all those years ago. We we "going together" in the eighth grade! Jim and David talked all evening. We had fun; a lot of fun.
Historical Fernandina Beach
This is a fun little town with coffee shops, restaurants, antique stores and more. The Visitor’s Center is right by the marina and will help you find anything you need. We walked the town and found a few nice antique shops off Center Street and Beech Street - I might need to come back with the suburban.
The beach is 1.5 miles from the marina - a straight shot down Center Street.
The Bike-Scoot-Or-Yak (and paddle boards) rentals are 2.4 miles away. Bikes are $35/day and they have a ton of choices. Scooters must be a LOT more because pricing wasn’t available online. You can walk it though - I bet they would deliver/pick-up from the marina.
Dinghy Problems
Ugh! We only had one day on the island because the dinghy engine is giving us a terrible headache. We really wanted to go into town and have dinner.
This is NOT the time for dinghy problems. This next stretch of waterway nearly depends on one for boat-shore travel because of the inlets and swift currents.
