DAYS 303-304 : CROSSING OUR WAKE & HEADING HOME

Image
Tangier Island to Bennet’s Creek (Pawpaw Hollow): 8.7 mph; 51.4 miles; 5:53 hours Bennet’s Creek to Our Dock: 9.1 mph; 48.3 miles; 5:17 miles We officially crossed our wake on Sunday, April 17, 2022 The words needed to express how we felt/feel are hard to find; I guess you can tell because it has taken more than a week to write this. We felt elated and sad. We questioned, what will we do now?! How will we blend back into our lives on land? Do we want to blend back in? Imagine all those emotions at once. It was a pretty tough moment. This was a trip Jim Beck had talked about forever. He has given me everything so I took the jump and acted as first mate. Jim Beck is my best friend, my love, my captain, and I would start over in a heart beat … what an incredible experience.   Levi was a trooper and rode the Bay like a seasoned salty pro; what a cool kid, not one complaint about the waves that were 4 feet with the random 5- and 6-footer tossed in for fun. We crashed Easter Dinner with a fe

DAYS 301-303: Deltaville to Tangier Island

Image
Deltaville to Middle of the Bay: 8.2 mph; 10.3 miles; 1:15 hours Middle of the Bay to Tangier Island: 8.5 mph; 17.7 miles; 2:05 hours LEVI BEFORE THE CROSSING We are traveling back across the Chesapeake Bay to Tangier Island. This will be Levi’s first crossing - hope the kiddo can handle the ride … he had waffles, bacon, and eggs for breakfast. LEVI AFTER THE CROSSING He was just fine! Parks’ Marina: $30/night for boats under 30’ and $35/night for over 30’. Electric, water, shower/bathroom.  You have to call Mr Parks and hell direct you, with great detail, how to enter the harbor and 'stay off the beach'. The island is quiet in April and doesn’t really get going until May. Two of the three restaurants, and one of the two ice cream stands, will not open this year because of financial hardships caused by COVID.  There must have been an island meeting recently because there was a lot of local talk about redesigning the town to resemble ‘the old fishing village’ and tidying up the

DAYS 297-300: Cape Charles to Deltaville

Image
Cape Charles to Deltaville: 8.7 mph; 32.6 miles; 3:44 hours Crossing the Bay to Deltaville was MUCH calmer - thank you Chesapeake Bay. The Bay, along the Virginia side from Norfolk to the Potomac, is full of marinas and anchorages - just pick one and explore the area. These little towns are quiet and full of history. White Stone Virginia is always close to my heart and full of adventure. My parents had a little cottage on the beach and I explored all day. I loved that little house. Reedsville has a fantastic museum that everyone should see. Deltaville Safe Harbor Stingray Point Marina : $2/ft (plus electric) with water, showers/bathrooms, coin-operated laundry, and a pool. We are surrounded by sailboats; this is good for us because a storm is coming in and we aren’t the tallest boat in the marina - a lesson learned from Tom's River. There isn't anything nearby and the staff is fabulous; so, if you need anything - just ask fro help. Hyco House Manor A big THANK YOU to ATO Mark L

DAYS 295-296: Norfolk to Cape Charles

Image
Norfolk VA to Cape Charles VA: 8.2 mph; 37.0 miles; 4:29 hours Cape Charles is new to me. I have never really explored the Eastern Shore so this will be an adventure. The bonus is seeing Bubbie and catching up with her and the family.  Trip Across the Bay from Norfolk to Cape Charles All the weather people are liars! It was NOT 1-2 ft waves; it was 2-3 ft with a 4 ft wave tossed in for good measure! Man! That was a nose dipper! But ... the hatch was closed ... When you get to Cape Charles, you really only have one choice for a marina - Cape Charles Harbor Town Marina and it’s gonna cost you about $3/ft (plus electric) with water, shower/bathroom, and coin-operated laundry. It’s a nice marina and the The Shanty restaurant is right there. A higher caliber restaurant, Hook at Harvey A Cape Charles Bistro , is around the way. If you use the walkway, you can make your way to a little 'old town' area. The public beach access is here too and wow, just wow, it’s beautiful.  Cape Char

MM 47.2 Lamb’s Marina (Camden) So we wouldn’t need to work around the Elizabeth City US 158 Bridge schedule, we left the EC FREE Dock late afternoon and headed to Lamb’s Marina . The marina is owned and operated by a close network of family and friends. They are delightful people and very helpful pulling us into place. We stayed on the fuel dock and paid $35/night (electric included) with water, shower/bathroom, coin-operated laundry, and wifi. The marina has a small convenient store and across the street is a restaurant, deli, and Family Dollar. MM 32.7 South Mills Lo
